chapter 6 reading notes

  • The news release is the backbone of most publicity programs

  • Fact sheets are one-page background sheets about an event, a product, or even the organization

  • Media kit, also called a press kit, contains a variety of materials, such as news releases, fact sheets, and photos

  • Media advisory, also called a media alert, which is used to let assignment editors know about newsworthy events or interview opportunities that could lend itself to photo or video coverage

  • Publicists spend a lot of time and energy preparing materials such as news releases, fact sheets, and media kits, but these efforts don’t amount to anything unless they convince an editor or a reporter that their story is newsworthy.

  • A good pitch has three phases:  1) researching the publication or broadcast show, 2) writing the e-mail or letter and making the call, and 3) following- up.
